US-Turkish relations are experiencing a diplomatic crisis after the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Turkey's justice and interior ministers because of Turkey's detention of US priest Andrew Brunson. The Turkish lira fell to a new record on Friday, falling by about 18% in its biggest daily loss since 2001, on the back of strained relations with Washington. The lira has lost about 40 percent of its value since the beginning of the year, largely due to concerns about the impact of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the economy and his repeated calls for lower interest rates in the face of rising inflation and deteriorating relations with the United States.
