Iran Sites Get UNESCO Status

UNESCO has added a number of ancient Iranian archeological sites to its World Heritage List, the world cultural body said.

There are several towers or "domes" in the city which are great examples of Iranian architecture. There is also a sun worship temple that dates back to the ancient Parthian Empire. More recent sites include an Ilkhanid church.

Maragheh is one of Iran's most ancient cities dating back to the Parthian Empire. It was once the capital city during the Ilkhanid era under the reign of Hulaku Khan when it became a center for scientists and researchers.
