Mediation to reveal details of the US-GCC initiative

Al-Wefaq Calls On States Involved In 2011 Mediation To Reveal Details Of The US-GCC Initiative.

The Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society called on certain foreign governments to help bring about an end to the “unjust” trial of its secretary-general and Bahrain’s opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman.

Sheikh Salman, who is already serving a 4-year prison term, was charged with “spying for the state of Qatar” in November of last year. During the latest court hearing on Thursday, the trail was adjourned until January 25.

The charges in the case stem from Sheikh Salman’s contacts with Qatari officials, who acted as mediators during a 2011 US-GCC initiative aimed at resolving Bahrain’s political crisis.

In a statement, Al-Wefaq urged the states involved in the matter to ‘transparently’ reveal the details behind the mediation effort.

The group also echoed previous declarations, which point to the fact that Bahrain’s monarch preapproved Sheikh Salman’s interactions with the Qataris.

Al-Wefaq added that the entire affair dates back seven years, but Sheikh Salman was charged only after Bahrain joined Saudi Arabia and the UAE in sanctioning Qatar.
