Overview of Iraq

Iraq , is officially named “The Republic of Iraq.” Iraq is located in Asia, surrounding the Mesopotamian alluvial plain, the Zagros mountain range and part of the Syrian Desert.

Iraq borders Turky, Iran, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Kuwait. It has a small section of coastline on the Persian Gulf. The capital city is Baghdad. It is located in the center eastern part of the country. The Tigris and Euphrates rivers run through the center of Iraq, and flow from the northwest to the southeast. The ancient rivers have provided Iraq with agrcultural land for centuries. This fertile land contrasts much of the desert landscape that covers Western Asia. 

History of Iraq

Known as the “Cradle of Civilization,” Iraq has a rich and complex history. Known inhabitants date back to the Chalcolithic-Stone Age. Iraq was conquered and inhabited by numerous empires, including the Sumerians, Assyrians, Babylonian, Seleucid and Parthian. The Ottoman Empire came to power in the 16th century and ruled until after World War I, when the British Empire took control for twelve years. Finally, after centuries of occupation, in 1932 Iraq established itself as its own Kingdom. In the present day, Iraq is a federal parliamentary democratic republic, run by a centralized governments.
