Turkey Ousts over 18,000 Official Employees

The Turkish authorities have expelled more than 18,5,000 official employees, including members of the army, security forces, teachers and university professors.

The decree, which has the force of law and does not need parliament's approval, has the names of 18,632 employees including more than 9,000 police officers, 6,000 members of the armed forces, about 3,000 military personnel, 2,000 air force personnel and more than 1,000 naval personnel on suspicion of links to terrorist organizations and groups working against national security.

The authorities also dismissed 199 academics, closed 12 institutions, three newspapers and a television channel. Turkish media described the decree as the last before the possible lifting of the emergency state on Monday.
