Criteria of Unity and Imam Hussein

Sheikh Muhammad Hashim al-Madani clarifies the relation between Imam Hussein's revolution and the Islamic unity.

Referring to Imam Hussein's uprising and revolution as the criteria for unity and the model on all levels, Madani said that every Muslim, who is keen to realize the principles of Islam and who seeks "to achieve the principles of this religion as God wanted, and to be confident he is moving in the right direction towards God" , can't replaces the Husseiniya renaissance with another experience or project as it includes "legitimate factors ...and other constants which each Muslim and believer crave to achieve as well as due to its leader himself", who enjoys legitimacy like no other person, saying:

1- Imam Hussein (PBUH) has a direct blood relation with Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

2- Imam Hussein (PBUH) enjoys validity in any move he takes "as it has been proven that he is immaculate and such person never do something wrong or in disobedience of Allah".

3- It has been proven that the Muslim community (Ummah) is ordered to obey him.

4-It has been proven that the Muslim nation is ordered to love him.

5-It has been proven that the nation should admit that they should follow and obey Imam Hussein (PBUH) as they follow Quran.

Meanwhile, Madani stressed that Imam Hussein (PBUH)"doesn’t need the nation, but the nation needs him" as he was assigned to serve the Muslim nation. The movement of Imam Hussein (PBUH) "was not because he needs this movement, but as the nation needs that Imam Hussein (PBUH) sacrifices for its sake", he added.

"Naturally, there is no escape for every person, who seeks to move in the direction of God..., to move in the direction of Imam Hussein (PBUH)," the cleric emphasized.

However, he noted that the nation faced obstacles to move in the direction of Imam Hussein (PBUH), stressing that there is difference between abandoning the movement willingly and being banned from following it.

He further said that the motives for moving in the direction of Imam Hussein (PBUH) are available, adding Imam Hussein (PBUH) deserves to be followed and the nation is ready to move in his direction as the nation wants to be united behind a movement towards God and knows that unity which God wants can only be established through the elements available in Imam Hussein (PBUH).

“So there are many requirements to move in the direction of Imam Hussein (PBUH), but there are people who prevent the nation,” he stressed.

When Imam Hussein (PBUH) was in Mecca, all the members of the nation were around him where all the members of the nation were praying behind him and consulting him and they even performed Hajj pilgrimage with Imam Hussein (PBUH) in that year which he was there, Madani explained, noting that Imam Hussein (PBUH) later discontinued the pilgrimage and left Mecca because of the assassination attempts by the Umayyad state against him.

He reiterated that there are requirements to move in the direction of Imam Hussein (PBUH). But, "who did prevent the nation from moving in the direction of Imam Hussein (PBUH)?" he said.

"Is Imam Hussein (PBUH) not good for being followed by the nation? Does Imam Hussein (PBUH) lack the legitimacy or the prerequisites for the leader whom the nation unites behind?" Madani wondered, answering "No, that all do not exist."

"Is the nation not interested in moving in the direction of Imam Hussein (PBUH)? Doesn’t the nation know which movement it should follow in order to satisfy God?" the cleric asked again, stressing it is not right.

“Then what is the problem that occurred?” he asked, saying that what happened was that the truth was being repelled, referring to the Quranic verse “Most of them, to the truth, are averse.

The cleric noted that most of those who had authority over the nation were hating the truth because following Imam Hussein (PBUH) will deprive them from any hope to control the nation and being followed by the nation, adding they were seeking power and knew that their only rival to reach power is the presence of Imam Hussein (PBUH), who wants to unite the nation behind the right Islamic values; therefore they began to stop the nation.

He clarified that the authority, back then, began preventing moving in the direction of Imam Hussein (PBUH) by force and that preachers, who were induced by the rulers, began preventing people through “camouflage and falsity” in addition to the false ideas spread by the Umayyad state, which is based on “sanctifying the authority”.

The cleric added that Muawiyah managed to shake the cultural entity of the nation and to inject it with wrong concepts, which have nothing to do with Islam, and convinced the nation with issues that do not exist, underlining that all these things aimed to strengthen the legitimacy of the Umayyad state and strengthen the power of Muawiyah.

Madani reaffirmed that one of the ideas, which have been promoted by Muawiyah and the preachers who he had been induced by money, was the sanctity of the ruler.

He added that they were saying “Whoever comes against the ruler by only an inch, abandons the Muslim community,” making the unity centers on the ruler, saying anyone who departs the ruler by an inch – “and not who departs Islam by an inch, nor who departs sharia (Islamic law) by an inch or who departs religion by an inch or who depart truth by an inch”.

Madani stressed that they made the ruler the criteria for unity, stressing that these sayings exist in Sahih Muslim and other books and are authenticated hadiths which have been promoted by the Umayyad state.

These concepts which the Umayyad state instilled aimed to prove the legitimacy of the authority and to do whatever it wants and to gather the nation as the nation should be united behind the ruler, the cleric said.

He added that such concepts made Muawiyah the criteria for unity and not Imam Hussein (PBUH) as he does not represent the power and accordingly whoever comes against Imam Hussein (PBUH), does not abandon the Muslim community, the cleric explained, noting that according to such hadiths, whoever comes against the ruler abandons the community, and not whoever comes against the truth.

Thus, those attempts to inform the nation that the criteria for unity is the ruler was among the main factors that led to keeping the nation away from following Imam Hussein (PBUH), Madani concluded.
