The Tenth Holy Imam, like his father, was also elevated to the rank of Imam in his childhood. He was six years old when his father Imam Muhammad al-Jawad died. After the death of al-Ma'mun' al-Mu`tasim succeeded him, and was later followed by the caliph al-Wathiq.

مّا دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ بَعْضُ أهْلِ الرَّيّ: أيْنَ كُنْتَ؟ زُرْتُ الحُسَيْنَ علیه السلام ، قالَ: أمّا إنّكَ لَوْ زُرْتَ قَبْرَ عَبْدِ العَظيمِ عِنْدَكُمْ لَكُنْتَ كَمَنْ زارَ الحُسَيْنَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ علیه السلام .

A person from Rey visited Imām Hādī (p.b.u.h.).Where were you? the Imām asked him. He replied, I have been [to Karbalā] on pilgrimage to the holy shrine of Huseyn (p.b.u.h.)". Imām said, "If you visit the holy shrine of ‘Abd al-‘Azīm in your own city, you will be rewarded just like a person who has visited Imām Huseyn (p.b.u.h.).
