Iran’s Pres. Says Talks with US Meaningless amid Sanctions

Iranian president Hassan Rouhani in a televised speech says that the US must prove it is willing to resolve problems through negotiations, adding “Donald Trump’s call for direct talks aimed at creating division inside Iran, stressing that the negotiations with U.S. would be meaningless while the sanctions are still imposed on Iran.

The Iranian President Hassan Rouhani made the remarks in a televised speech on Monday evening, during which he said that the US cannot prove its trustworthiness after JCPOA withdrawal and re-imposing sanctions.

President Rouhani further said that Trump call for direct talks was aimed at creating division inside Iran.

“The principle of negotiations is loyalty, and how can we negotiate with a county who left the table imposing sanctions?” he said.

Referring to Iran’s relations with the EU, Rouhani voiced his expectations for more tangible actions from Europe.

“Our partners in Europe and other region have been doing their best, but we are expecting more concrete actions from them,” the president said.

“Europe is resisting US stance against Iran despite being Washington’s long-term allies,” Rouhani said.

Meanwhile, he said that Iran is still waiting for practical measures by Europe to keep the nuclear deal alive.

President Rouhani further said that the type of relations with Russia and China are not comparable with those of Europe.

He also said that countries have engaged in a full-fledged campaign against the US pressures.

He pointed out that Russia and china have promised to resist the US sanctions regarding banking sector and oil exports, adding that China is working on upgrading the Arak reactor.

The Iranian president stressed that Iran has good and growing relations with China. ASEAN, and India.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Rouhani noted that some economic problems in Iran have roots in distant past.

Earlier on Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington will enforce sanctions against Iran.

In May, Trump withdrew the U.S. from a nuclear deal, which was signed in 2015 between Iran and the P5+1 group of nations (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany).
