Netanyahu Secretly Visits Egypt to Talk Gaza Ceasefire

Israeli regime Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in May 22 paid a "secret" visit to Egypt, to discuss with Egyptian president a ceasefire with Gaza, Channel 10 television reported Monday.

There was no immediate confirmation of the visit from official sources, and the Egyptian presidency did not comment on the Israeli private channel.

According to the channel, "the meeting between Netanyahu and Sisi lasted several hours," and was at a time when the Israeli occupation forces escalate violence in the strip.

The channel quoted Israeli sources as saying that talks between Netanyahu and Sisi focused on the possibility of reaching a long-term truce in the Gaza Strip, the return of the Palestinian Authority to manage the sector, ease the Israeli siege imposed on it and rehabilitate its vital infrastructure.

Hamas has been in control of the territory for more than a decade after it expelled forces loyal to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the Gaza Strip witnessed the most serious confrontation since the 2014 war. A ceasefire was reached on Thursday evening.

Since 30 March, at least 169 Palestinians have been shot dead by Israelis. For the first time since 2014, an Israeli soldier was killed on July 20.
