"We reject and condemn this American decision in its entirety. The United States does not have the right to cancel UNRWA, which was formed by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly," said the chief executive of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and chief negotiator, Saeb Erekat.
The Trump administration announced officially on Friday that it will cut the entire American aid budget to UNRWA, the UN agency in charge of assisting Palestinian refugees and their descendants.
Erekat called on the countries of the world "to reject this resolution and to provide all possible support to UNRWA in respect of the United Nations resolution establishing UNRWA until the issue of refugees in all its aspects has been resolved".
“The United States of America has no right to support and bless theft of Palestinian lands and illegitimate Israeli colonialism on Palestinian land. It has no right to support and bless the theft of Jerusalem and its annexation to Israel,” he said. "It has no right to act according to the whims of Benjamin Netanyahu."
"UNRWA is not one of the Palestinian Authority institutions. It was created by a resolution of the United Nations, and therefore the international community as a whole has to reject and condemn the American decision," Erekat added.
Ahmed Abu Houli, head of the PLO's Refugee Affairs Department, called on alternative donors to accelerate the funding gap.
Abu Houli said in a press statement that the United States goal to withdraw fully from UNRWA shows that it has plans to end the agency, the liquidation of the Palestinian cause, the exertion of political pressure and extortion of the Palestinian People and leadership.
For his part, Sami Abu Zuhri, a spokesman for Hamas in Gaza, pointed out that the US decision to stop funding puts the administration of US President Donald Trump in the enemy position of the Palestinian People, the Arab nation and Muslims.
"We call for an international demonstration to confront American tyranny," Abu Zuhri said.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) expressed "deep regret and disappointment" at the decision of the United States to cut its aid budget.
