More Than 1 Million Refugees, Displaced Syrians Return Home

The Russian Ministry of Defense said that the number of Syrian refugees and displaced due to the war in Syria and who have returned to their homes to date reached one million and 472 thousand people.

"Thanks to the measures taken, more than one million and 472,637 Syrian citizens have been able to return to their homes," head of Russia’s National Defense Control Center, Col. Gen. Mikhail Mizintsev, said during a meeting of Russia's interdepartmental coordination headquarters on the return of refugees to Syria.

"Some 242,000 and 295 Syrian refugees have returned home from foreign countries," Mizintsev said.

In recent months, in cooperation with Russia, the Syrian government has stepped up efforts to repatriate Syrian refugees and has invited them to return.

On July 18, Russia announced the creation of a refugee center in Syria that would receive, relocate and accommodate civilians who return to their homes from neighboring states after fleeing hostilities under the supervision of the Russian Foreign and Defense Ministries and the Syrian authorities within the framework of the Russia's interdepartmental coordination headquarters on the return of refugees to Syria.
Russia will discuss the necessary efforts in this field in various international platforms, noting that most of the Syrian territory that was in the hands of the gunmen was liberated by the government forces, which allows the return of refugees and displaced persons to their permanent residence.

According to data released by various official bodies earlier, from 6 to 7 million people fled from Syria since the outbreak of civil war in the country in 2011, mostly to Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon, with which Russia is actively engaged on this file.
