On Friday, Salam for Democracy and Human Rights reported that detainees in Bahrain’s Jaw Prison were beaten and forced to remain outdoors under the scorching desert sun for taking part in Ashura mourning rites.
Meanwhile, Manama’s security forces stormed a number of Shiite villages, forcibly removing black flags and Ashura slogans.
Several local residents were struck with birdshot pellets as they attempted to prevent officers from taking down the banners.
Ashura is a major part of the Shiite religious calendar when communities around the globe mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS).
