Tensions in Saudi-led Coalition Over UN Experts Team Extension in Yemen

According to Al-Mayadeen, there are copies of the two draft resolutions on Yemen. The first was presented by a number of European countries, like Netherlands, Belgium and Canada.

The second by four Arab countries participating in the Saudi-led Coalition, namely Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Sudan and Yemeni former presedent, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi.

The European project calls for the extension of the work of the UN expert group, which presented at the end of last August a report accusing the US-Saudi coalition countries of committing violations amounting to war crimes, while the Arab project demands to satisfy with the Yemeni National Commission of Inquiry set up by the Hadi government, which was described by the UN experts' report as biased and unreliable.

Tension among the four countries that seek to mobilize the largest number of the 47 member states of the Human Rights Council behind their project has increased significantly over the past few days with a clear tendency on the part of most PGCC states to support the European project.

These countries held several meetings with representatives of European countries to urge them not to follow the European project and with other Arab countries. the coalition countries have not yet won a comprehensive Arab decision behind the Saudi-UAE effort.

Arab sources said that the main reason for the refusal of the representatives of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Sudan to extend the work of the UN Panel of Experts is the secret list presented to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, which includes the names of senior officials in these countries accused of war crimes or stand up, behind these crimes.

The Human Rights Council is scheduled to discuss the report of the UN experts on Yemen on 25 and 26 of this month, with the draft resolutions to be put to the vote at the end of the debate.
