Speaking on Al-Kawthar program “Problems and Solutions”, Sami Khadra stressed the importance of words, saying people communicate through words. He added that humans are a cluster of feelings and emotions, and no one accepts being hurt by a word, warning that hatred and enmity could be ensued from bad words.
In small-scale rural societies or big societies, those who are perfect in addressing people capture the hearts, while those who have a foolish tongue push people away from themselves and people avoid them, Khadra said.
Most of disputes among relatives and friends are caused by words, he reiterated.
Thus, selecting the good word has many benefits and can thwart conflicts, the cleric said, quoting a part of a Quranic verse that says “Repel evil with good, and the person who was your enemy becomes like an intimate friend.”
Khadra further said we have to get used to the good word, therefore we would use good words like “There is no God but Allah” or “There is no power and no strength save in Allah” even in response to an insult.
He stressed that every person has to prune himself and to use good words even if that person was raised in bad environment.
Defining the good word, Khadra said it is everything good, referring to a part of a verse in the Holy Quran that says “and speak nicely to people”.
The good word has to be familiar and not provocative, he added.
The cleric also quoted the words of Allah that say “A good word is like a good tree-its root is firm, and its branches are in the sky. It yields its fruits every season by the will of its Lord.”
Khadra also emphasized that the good speech leads to increasing the livelihood and wealth, and improving relations between relatives.
He referred to the Quranic verse, “O you who believe! Be conscious of God, and speak in a straightforward manner.”
He added that Allah ordered people not to insult anyone even the unbelievers, citing a verse in the Holy Quran that says “Do not insult those they call upon besides God, lest they insult God out of hostility and ignorance.”
He noted that people have to get used to be patient and repress their anger, adding that sometimes the best reaction to the bad words is silence, referring to the Quranic verse “And when they hear vain talk, they avoid it, and say, 'We have our deeds, and you have your deeds; peace be upon you; we do not desire the ignorant.'"
