The Ashigh are the inheritors and keepers of traditional Iranian folk music from a thousand years ago to date. They have spent centuries in passing the legacy down the generations by word of mouth.
According to prominent Ashigh master musician, Changuiz Mahdipour, the city of Tabriz in northwestern Iran has the potential to become a center for Ashigh music.
Speaking about the history of the music, he said: “Ashigh music dates back to the Safavid era. It can be considered a holy art which has grown from the heart of a nation.”
He added: “Fortunately, this has not been a courtier industry at the disposal of a particular class. It has to do with the people’s beliefs and has been influenced by their lifestyles to reach us today.”
He said Ashigh music is an important part of the identity of Iranians and the people of East Azarbaijan Province, adding: “Many Ashigh musicians have emerged from this province and we must be appreciative of them.”
