Study of the Qur'an

As most people in the West have been brought up on misconceptions concerning Islam and the Qur'an; for a large part of my life, I myself was one such person. Let me cite one or two specific examples to indicate the kind of inaccurate ideas generally current.

The Quran

Islam today is the religion of about one billion people. It is far from correct to think that all Muslims are familiar with the story of how their religion became established.

There are two scientific viewpoints on the creation of living organisms including plants.

Zumar (Throngs)

The Surah derives its name from verse 71 and 73 in which the word zumar has occurred.

Saffat (Drawn Up in Ranks)

The name is derived from the word was saffat with which the Surah begins.

Ma'ida (The Table)

This Sarah takes its' name from verse 112 in which the word Mai'dah occurs. Like the names of many other surahs this name has no special relation to the subject of the Surah but has been used merely as a symbol to distinguish it from other surahs.
