And sometimes, it is referred to super human powers.
There are lot of differences between Islamic theologians and Western thinkers about said issue.
Majority of Islamic scholars, think miracles are wonderful works that the Prophet (peace be upon him) does it with the permission from the God.
Thus, the "miracle" is an extraordinary work, which will be done by the will of God.
Although the causes and reasons for these things that are not common and can be achieved with special training, things like ascetics shows; these actions are not miracles.
For God's chosen people, it is not necessary to be prophet, but sometimes other saints can do extraordinary things, these works are called as dignity.
Great master MOTAHARI says: The miracle, means ruling of a law upon another law and not cancelling the other one.
IBN KHALDOUN's definition says: "Miracles, are actions that man is incapable of doing them and they are out of the power of man.
BELIEF OF WESTERN THINKERS:
Western thinkers about the "miracle" have different views, which some of them are mentioned below:
Violating the laws of nature.
Miracles, are direct acts of God, which breaks natural laws. (Hume) (1711)
Aquinas says: miracle is an incident which has been done by the God in obvious natural order.
Charles D. Brad believes: seeming miracle, is an event that appears with one or more of the principles (eight principles of the nature).
And the real miracle is an incident which is incompatible with one or more of principles.
MACNION says: miracle means, something that changes the natural laws, and it is impossible.
Science alone can`t produce natural conditions.
Assessment from Islamic thinkers: Muslim scholars think, the universe, based on a system of cause and effect and all the interactions including miracle follow the law of nature and there is no violation.
ALAME MESBAH says:
Law of causality remains as it is. Miracle has no conflict with this
Principle. So we have to believe there is a reason for every action.
MOTAHARI explains:
The miracle neither denies the law of causality, nor violates it.
For example, if a prophet says that I can do something without a reason, then he is a false prophet.
MIRACLE, A SURPRISING MATTER:
Another definition of miracle which Western innovators have shown, it is considered to be surprising.
Therefore, some of the companions of "AFRANSIAN" and "DOMINIKIAN" groups in the late nineteenth century were calling every strange action as a miracle.
SIGNIFICANT EVENT:
Fuller defined the "miracle" as a "significant event" and Paul Tillich counts three conditions for miracle:
A) -Extremely shocking and amazing event, which is consistent with the reality.
B) -Refers to the mystery of existence and disclose its relation with us.
C)-the event as shows a peaceful experience.
The difference between a "miracle" and the "magic":
The miracles, the same incident, such as "magic" is similar, but so Ayatollah JAVADI AMOLI says:
Miracle, is associated with the prophecy. And it is a wonderful thing which will be done by the prophet.
Magic can be vanished by another magic, but it is not so for miracle.
Sometimes it is impossible for the magician to do his action again, but it is not the same for the miracle.
PORTIL says: traditional view and historical events proves that if there is God, then we can`t reject the miracles. And miracles are the best proofs for the historical events.
Thomas AQOUINY also argues on this topic:
Miracle does not mean that natural law is revoked or suspended. Miracle happens according to the law. But it is rare, so we can`t do the research about it.
SCHLIER MACHER investigates the matter and assumes:
Making the bread two thousand times more by Jesus (PBUH) has been done by a secret law of the nature.
Healing the sick is a force, which many people possess. But, perhaps Christ was having fullest power.
Saint Augustine says:
It seems to us that this motion (miracle) is in the opposite direction of the nature, but God who made it do not think so.
Professor martyr MOTAHARI also says:
Human body has a law in composition and structure.
Medical science has no choice except using the same rules. But at the same time, a series of psychological laws have been discovered which sometimes a mental state, (such as hypnosis), effects on the body.
Does this mean that the medical law and medicine, is not true or not certain?
No medical law is true, certainly, but here is another factor which is not the medical factor. It is a psychological factor.
But after all, the most important thing about an action is the possibility of its occurrence. Many Western innovators and
All Islamic thinkers believe that such events occurred. The following is an example:
A retired accountant from France who was blind and doctors could not treat him, was searching for a treatment and did not believe the doctors.
He decided to go to the famous shrine of "Our Lady Bernadette" in Lourdes area. So he went there.
He washed his body for several hours in the fountain, then he got back his vision and was able to walk without sticks.
There are plenty of such examples in Muslim books.
Charles DOBENABARD (1887- 1971 AD.) an English philosopher, states that there are eight general sections which have been accepted by all human sciences, and if a miracle, is incompatible with these sciences, is in conflict with the science.
Some of these items include:
- When a man dies, his soul can`t effect on any element.
- The human spirit can`t directly create a material object in motion.
Anyway the theory of BRAD is not acceptable by Muslim clergies. Because Muslim leaders believe that, miracles are in the hands of holy prophets and simple people can`t perform it.
Hume says: "The miracle is a violation of the laws of nature".
RASSEL says:
If we reject the law, we must draw a line on the possibility of the miracle, because, miracle is the work of God,
Which violates the natural law.
Review:
A) A "miracle" can`t be explained on the basis of natural causes.
B) Understanding the natural reason for a phenomenon, is difficult for the brain. Because wisdom wants a reason for it. Some acts are there which brain can understand their outside appearance but do not find the reason for the cause.
Experience confirms their external reality, just like
extraordinary acts by the ascetics, sorcerers.
However, we have to believe the Islamic thinkers, to explain about this matter. Great masters like ALAME TABATABAI and master MOTAHARI who clearly say miracle is a real fact which does not violates the law of nature.
